Treatment will depend on the type of periodontal disease
and how far the condition has progressed. Treatment
options include:
Scaling & Root Planing
Represent the initial phase of treatment. The
mouth will be divided into four quadrants. Anaesthesia
is usually required. For this reason we break the treatment
into two sessions. We consider these session to be one
of the most valuable services we offer to our patients.
Scaling - cleans the teeth to remove deposits from above
and below the gumline. Root planing—smoothes the,
toxin induced, rough root surfaces so the gum can heal.
Studies show that bacterial colonies
found in plaque can get reorganized in about three months.
To help protect against periodontal disease, it is key
to prevent the buildup of plaque. Patients with periodontal
disease may need to be seen for maintenance recalls
every 3-4 months. Home care with brushing and flossing
essential as well.
Oral irrigation
Directs liquid below the gumline to flush out
and kill germs and allow the regrowth of healthy tissue.
Follow up
After the initial scaling and root planing, a 4 week
follow up visit, where probing depth will have to be
remeasured, will need to be schedualed to assess progress.
If deep pockets are found and bone has been destroyed,
further treatment options such as periodontal surgery
or antibiotic therapy may be recommended.
